BigCommerce Review

BigCommerce is one of a handful of website-building tools competing for market share in the e-commerce space. It competes directly with services such as Shopify and WooCommerce. The company behind the platform was founded in 2009 by two Australian entrepreneurs looking to build a better shopping cart.

If you are looking to build an e-commerce site, BigCommerce is definitely worth looking at. But understand going in that it is not a platform intended for beginners. You have to have at least a basic understanding of e-commerce principles or you will get lost rather quickly.

Building Your Site

As you start building, you will note that BigCommerce is split into two sections: back office and the store. Back-office operations involve all the mundane stuff like entering products, setting prices, managing discounts, addressing shipping, etc. Building the actual store is the fun part.

Nevertheless, BigCommerce’s split system can make building a new site confusing. We suggest completing the back office before building the store.

BigCommerce Features

Moving beyond basic site building leads us to some of the features that users appreciate. The platform’s strongest feature is its built-in scalability. Unlike some of its competitors, your business will have to get pretty big to outgrow BigCommerce. Its scaling capabilities are evidenced by some of the companies that use it – like Skullcandy and Ben & Jerry’s, just to name a couple.

Other excellent features include:

  • built-in SEO tools
  • abandoned cart recovery
  • no-fee support for 6 payment processors
  • cross-channel selling on Facebook, Instagram, and other sites
  • 600 apps for enhancing site functionality.

There are many more features above and beyond the ones listed here. There is really no way to learn about all of them without giving BigCommerce a try. To this end, BigCommerce offers a 30-day free trial.

Pricing

BigCommerce currently offers three different pricing plans, starting with Standard. It is billed annually at a cost of $29.95 per month and is a good option for new businesses. You get unlimited products, unlimited staff accounts, and more.

BigCommerce Plus gives you additional features at a price of $79.95 per month. Extra features include abandoned cart recovery and the opportunity to offer your customers revolving lines of credit.

The top plan is Pro, coming in at $299.95 per month. You get all the platform’s features here. If BigCommerce Pro still doesn’t meet your needs, the Enterprise plan can be customized to your specific needs, both in pricing and features.
